According to their website, M for Montreal’s mandate is to showcase Montreal’s top “export ready” bands. Here are my totally biased picks for best of M for Montreal 2007:
And the winner is - We are Wolves.
M for Montreal is a contest and the official winner was We are Wolves (Nous Sommes Loups). I concur with the judges on this one, We are Wolves gave an all around performance. The band’s indie-electro-punk-rock vibe, stage antics and costumes combined for a total show experience. This band rocks.
Chocolat was the first show to play and was the surprise of the event for me. This band was mucho solid, they performed with the fluidity of a toured act and they’re pop-rock rhythm was good ol’ fashioned listening.
Gotta mention Krief. This guy kills guitars for a living. He’s isn’t violent per se, but to be that good you’ve got to be a little disturbed. How can one man play a guitar with so much passion you ask? Only one way to find out… go see his show. Hendrix beware.
Next up is Creature. This living thing is a natural high. Band leader Kim Ho is oh-so-well put together he reminds me of a modern day, tamed Prince. Creature have been on the circuit for some time now but have yet to garnish major notoriety, well their time might have come. Please sir, may I have another dance/ party/ pop.
Hot Springs. This band has a unique look and sound. A strong female vocalist is quite a treat. Check out “Head Rush” (video: here) and think Jefferson Airplane, nuff said.
And then there was Thunderheist, the last act of the two day event. Should it be illegal for a two man person hip-hop act to bring the party like a train wreck…? Maybe. But who cares as long as the passengers survive to raise the roof once more. Thank you Thunderheist for bringing my air pounding fists to higher levels of partydom. Thank you very much.
Typing sucks, here are the honorable mentions:
Priestess (may our ear drums take mercy on us, my emotions are still rambling on). Bloodshot Bill (I shed a tear for the man, he’s all alone with so much talent and frenzy). The Stills (they still got it). Les Breastfeeders (Can I borrow your tambourine man, please? He is adorable!). And finally, the after party act, Plaster, while not officially on the bill this band still managed to bring the ruckus.
