Crudessence is Montreal’s newest Vegan and Raw foodist’s dream come true. The food service company is well known as a caterer par excellence and they have just opened a cafe located within a close proximity to the Sunday Tam Tam’s, just off Parc Jean Mance, at Esplanade and Rachel.

Lisa Shalom, a friendly staffer, was nice enough to tell me about what goes on at Crudessence, she explained that the theory behind the establishment is to promote healthy lifestyles while proving that eating fast does not have to mean eating badly. The snacks and drinks served at Crudessence look and taste hearty and healthy. Here’s to feeling good. Cheers.

You see, with multiple locations (and owners) there is inevitably a steady debate over which is the mightiest. A few years back there was an article run (in one of those distributions made from trees… News Papers I think they call them?) on the best burgers in Montreal. Naturally Dilallo was included, but only the Notre-Dame street location, a.k.a. Chez Meloche, none of the other 5 locations were reviewed. Hence the question is begged: which is truly the best Dilallo burger, or are they all equivalently scrumptious??

Dilallo has been around since 1929 and their burgers are home-made and fresh, they have Beef, Chicken, and an excellent Fish (recommended). This is one of the best burger meals for under 10$ in the city.

Dilallo in St Henri is located at:
2523 Notre-Dame Ouest (a few blocks east of Atwater)
La Banquise is a full menued 24 hour Casse-Croûte (including a huge list of poutines). Well known within the French community, but not so well known with the Anglophone and University crowds. This is too bad because something that unites people in Montreal has got to be the poutine, of which La banquise has about the best I’ve ever had. In Montreal we are all fascinated by the poutine, and in line with that interest comes a never ending supply of Top Ten Poutine lists. Here is one offered by the Mirror(of course this one’s only a top 5):

Mirror’s Best of Montreal 2005
Best Poutine
1. La Belle Province (various locations)
2. Lafleur (various locations)
3. Casse-Croûte La Banquise (994 Rachel E., 525-2415)
4. McDonald’s (various locations)
5. Mondo Frites (3899 St-Laurent, 281-6521)

Well that pretty much sums up why the Mirror is whack… McDonald’s?? Who voted in this shamefull display of Poutinage!

Casse-Croûte La Banquise
994 Rachel East, pretty close to St Denis and right next to Lafontaine Parc.
